Claudia Gray, il cui vero nome è in realtà Amy Vincent, è tra le più quotate scrittrici americane di romanzi young adult paranormal ed è conosciuta soprattutto per la serie di “Evernight”, molto apprezzata anche in Italia e composta dai volumi “Evernight”, “Stargazer”, “Hourglass” e “Afterlife”, più lo spin-off “Balthazar”. Abbiamo avuto modo di raggiungerla a New Orleans, dove abita, e di strapparle un’intervista, nonostante i suoi molteplici impegni, non ultimo la sua nuova serie “Spellcaster”. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato.
CREDO DOVREMMO COMINCIARE DALL’INIZIO: CHI E’ CLAUDIA GRAY?
Claudia Gray non è il mio vero nome e ho preso uno pseudonimo senza un vero motivo di sorta. A volte questa è in realtà la ragione migliore per fare le cose. Io sono una scrittrice a tempo pieno che vive a New Orleans. Finora, nella vita, sono stata una disc jockey, un avvocato, una giornalista e una estremamente pessima cameriera, solo per citarne alcuni. In particolare mi piace passare il tempo in viaggiando, facendo escursioni, leggendo e ascoltando musica. Più di ogni altra cosa, mi piace scrivere.
COSA TI PIACE DI PIU’ DELLO SCRIVERE?
Mi piace praticamente l’intero processo, ma mi piace particolarmente quando una scena inizia ad andare bene e mi ci sento davvero dentro. Mi piace anche ascoltare i lettori e scoprire che cosa hanno pensato della storia.
I TUOI LIBRI PIU’ FAMOSI SI DIVIDONO IN DUE SAGHE DIFFERENTI. PRIMA DI TUTTO, POSSIAMO PARLARE DELLA SERIE DI “EVERNIGHT”: COME HAI INVENTATO LA STORIA E COME SI E’ SVILUPPATA LA SERIE?
Vorrei dire che sono sempre stata interessata a vampiri, lupi mannari, fantasmi e tutto ciò che più o meno dovrebbe esistere (purchè lontano da me), ma che così non è. Ero solita controllare libri di folklore in biblioteca e leggere per ore. Poi c’è stata Anne Rice, poi c’è stata “Buffy”, poi c’è stata “Moonlight”… Poi, un paio di anni fa, mi è venuta l’idea per la serie “Evernight”, e ho pensato di fare un tentativo. Quando HarperCollins ha accettato di pubblicare “Evernight”, abbiamo deciso insieme che sarebbe stato il primo di una serie di quattro libri. Prima di completare “Evernight”, mi sono seduta e ho lavorato le linee approssimative di quello che sarebbe successo in tutti e quattro i romanzi. Anche se ho deviato un po’ da quelle delineate, e faccio sempre brainstorming per nuovi elementi da aggiungere o modi per renderli migliori, la storia di base e i grandi eventi rimangono gli stessi. Ho delle idee per i libri di “E
vernight” oltre a questi quattro, ma hey, che cosa c’è là di fronte al mio cavallo? Penso che sia un carretto!
LA TUA SECONDA SERIE FAMOSA E IMPORTANTE E’ LA NUOVA SAGA DI “SPELLCASTER”: COSA PUOI DIRCI IN MERITO?
La serie “Spellcaster” è stata pubblicata non appena ho finito con i libri di “Evernight”. Questa sarà una serie di tre libri in cui una giovane strega con buone intenzioni, Lia, si ritrova a dover richiamare poteri più oscuri per sconfiggere una maga pericolosa e rompere la maledizione che grava sull’uomo che ama. Sono molto entusiasta di questi libri e mi auguro che lo siate anche voi. Stiamo ancora lavorando sulle loro date di pubblicazione, ma non sono troppo lontane!
E COSA PUOI DIRCI DEL ROMANZO SINGOLO “FATEFUL”?
In “Fateful” siamo nel 1912, e Tess Davies è stata intrappolata alle dipendenze della prepotente famiglia Lisle per anni. Ma ora i Lisle sono diretti in America, con Tess al seguito. Una volta che la nave sui cui stanno navigando – il transatlantico Titanic – raggiungerà la sua destinazione, i piani Tess sono di mettersi in proprio. Quando Tess incontra Alec, un bel passeggero di prima classe, si lascia rapidamente impigliare dai suoi oscuri segreti. Il pericolo che si trovano ad affrontare non è nemico comune: i licantropi lo stanno inseguendo anche sulla nave, e adesso anche lei. Sono così tanti che non mi sarebbe mai possibile nominarli tutti. Se dovessi pescarne uno dal mucchio, direi “Via col vento” e Margaret Mitchell.
L’ULTIMA DOMANDA. CHE PROGETTI HAI PER IL FUTURO?
Proprio ora sto delineando il secondo romanzo della serie “Spellcaster” (ancora senza titolo) e giocando con alcune nuove idee che spero porteranno ad altri libri in futuro. Inoltre, ho appena terminato un racconto intitolato “Talent” per un’antologia sulle arti dello spettacolo, che sarà pubblicato da “Upstart Crow” nel 2013.

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S CLAUDIA GRAY?
Claudia Gray is not my real name and I took a pseudonym for no real reason whatsoever. Sometimes this is actually the best reason to do things. I am a full-time novelist based in New Orleans. So far, in life, I’ve been a disc jockey, a lawyer, a journalist and an extremely bad waitress, just to name a few. I especially like to spend time traveling, hiking, reading and listening to music. More than anything else, I enjoy writing.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WRITING?
I enjoy pretty much the whole process, but I particularly like it when a scene starts to go well and I get really into it. I also love hearing from readers and finding out what they thought about the story.
YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE DIVIDED IN TWO DIFFERENT SAGAS. FIRST OF ALL, WE CAN SPEAK ABOUT THE “EVERNIGHT” SERIES: HOW DID YOU INVENTED THE STORY AND HOW IT HAS DEVELOPED THE SERIES?
I would say that I’ve always been interested in vampires, werewolves, ghosts and pretty much anything that should exist (if far from me) but doesn’t. I used to check books of folklore out of the library and read for hours. Then there was Anne Rice, then there was “Buffy”, then there was “Moonlight”… Then, a couple of years ago, the idea for the “Evernight” series came to me, and I thought I would give it a try. When HarperCollins agreed to publish “Evernight”, we decided together that it would be the first of a series of four books. Before I completed “Evernight”, I sat down and worked out rough outlines for what would happen in all four novels. Although I have deviated from those outlines somewhat, and am always brainstorming for new elements to add or ways to make them better, the core story arc and major events remain the same. I have ideas for “Evernight” books beyond these four, but hey, what’s that way out there in front of my horse? I think it’s a cart!

ORTANT AND FAMOUS SERIES IS THE NEW “SPELLCASTER” SAGA: WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?
The “Spellcaster” series was published as soon as I’m finished with the “Evernight” books. That will be a three-book series in which a well-meaning young witch, Lia, finds she must call upon darker powers to defeat a dangerous enchantress and break the curse on the man she loves. I’m very excited about these books and hope you will be too. We’re still working out the publication dates on these, but they’re not far away!
AND WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE STAND-ALONE NOVEL, “FATEFUL”?
In “Fateful”, it’s 1912, and Tess Davies has been trapped in the employ of the overbearing Lisle family for years. But now the Lisles are headed to America, with Tess in tow. Once the ship they’re sailing on—the RMS Titanic—reaches its destination, Tess plans to strike out on her own. When Tess meets Alec, a handsome first-class passenger, she quickly becomes entangled in his dark secrets. The danger they face is no ordinary enemy: werewolves are stalking him even on the ship—and now her, too. Her growing love for Alec will put Tess in mortal peril, though a greater and more tragic danger lies ahead…

WHAT BOOKS OR AUTHORS HAVE INFLUENCED YOU MOST IN YOUR OWN WRITING?
There are so many I could never possibly name them all. If I had to pick one out from the horde, I’d have to say “Gone With The Wind” and Margaret Mitchell.
THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?
Right now I’m outlining the second novel in the “Spellcaster” series (no title yet!) and playing with some new ideas that I hope are going to lead to other books in the future. Also, I just completed a short story called “Talent” for an anthology about the performing arts, which will be published by “Upstart Crow” in 2013.
