Americana del Wisconsin, Larissa Ione ha scritto il suo primo romanzo a soli dodici anni: si trattava di una storia di licantropi dalle atmosfere dark e horror. La vita l’ha poi portata a intraprendere diversi lavori, tra i quali quello di meteorologa, addestratrice di cani e agente speciale. Da alcuni anni ha scelto di dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla scrittura. Con le serie “Demonica” e “Lords of Deliverance”, pubblicate in Italia da Leggereditore (etichetta parallela alla Fanucci), si è imposta ai vertici delle classifiche di New York Times e Usa Today, conquistando una folta schiera di lettrici… e di lettori. Abbiamo avuto l’onore e il piacere di intervistarla per voi: ecco cosa ci ha raccontato.
PENSO CHE POSSIAMO COMINCIARE DALL’INIZIO: CHI E’ LARISSA IONE?
Prima di tutto, voglio ringraziarvi per avermi ospitata. Okay, chi sono io? Per lo più, sono una grande sfigata. Amo i libri, gli animali, i film e i videogiochi. Mi piacciono anche Star Trek e le convention di fantascienza, quindi sì, sono una grande sfigata.
COME HAI COMINCIATO A SCRIVERE?
Ho iniziato a scrivere da bambina, per cui ho sempre saputo che volevo diventare una scrittrice. Ma non è accaduto fino a quando non ho letto un romanzo rosa, all’età di 24, allorché ho capito che volevo scrivere romanzi d’amore. Prima di allora avevo provato a fare horror e fantasy, ma dopo che mi sono innamorata del genere romantico, ho capito che potevo mescolare tutto quello che avevo già scritto con le relazioni sentimentali.
I TUOI LIBRI PIU’ FAMOSI SONO SUDDIVISI IN TRE SAGHE DIFFERENTI. PRIMA FRA TUTTE, PUOI RACCONTARCI QUALCOSA DELLA SERIE “MOONBOUND CLAN VAMPIRES”?
Si tratta di una nuova serie in cui i vampiri sono stati schiavizzati dagli esseri umani. Ma alcuni vampiri vivono liberi e stanno lottando per rimanere in quel modo. I vampiri liberi vivono in clan, più o meno come i nativi americani hanno fatto secoli fa … e questo perché il virus dei vampiri iniziò all’interno delle popolazioni native americane.
COME HAI INVENTATO LA STORIA E COME SI E’ SVILUPPATA LA SAGA?
L’idea della serie mi è venuta tanto tempo fa, ma non posso dire esattamente che cosa l’abbia scatenata. Un giorno era proprio lì. Ma era da molto tempo che avevo voglia di usare la tradizione dei nativi americani in una serie, quindi questo è stato il modo migliore per farlo.
COSA DOBBIAMO ASPETTARCI DAL FUTURO DI QUESTA SAGA?
Un sacco di colpi di scena! La verità sul virus dei vampiri sarà rivelata, così come per quale motivo i vampiri sono stati presi come schiavi. I lettori potranno anche assistere alla caduta della schiavitù dei vampiri.
UN’ALTRA IMPORTANTE E FAMOSA SERIE, LA PIU’ LUNGA DI TUTTE, E’ QUELLA DI “DEMONICA / LORDS OF DELIVERANCE”: COSA PUOI DIRCI IN MERITO?
I libri di “Demonica” sono stati descritti come se “Buffy l’ammazzavampiri” incontrasse “E.R.” (“E.R.” è una fiction televisiva medica, nel caso non la conosciate). La descrizione è abbastanza precisa, dato che la scintilla iniziale dell’idea per la mia serie è venuta da un episodio di “Angel”, in cui Angel, un vampiro, era stato gravemente ferito. Aveva bisogno di un ospedale, ma come vampiro, non poteva andarci per chiedere aiuto. Così ho creato uno. Ho aperto l’Underworld General Hospital con i demoni, i vampiri e i lupi mannari, e poi ho fatto in modo che ci fosse molto conflitto tra le specie. E, naturalmente, questi demoni sono nemici degli umani cacciatori di demoni che danno loro la caccia.
Nel quinto libro della serie, “Peccato eterno”, l’eroina, Sin, scatena accidentalmente il primo cavaliere dell’Apocalisse sul mondo, che cosa che dà il via alla serie “Lords of Deliverance”. In “Lords of Deliverance”, i lettori conosceranno i Quattro Cavalieri dell’Apocalisse, ma è ambientato nel mondo di “Demonica”, così i personaggi di “Demonica” giocano grandi ruoli. In realtà, vedo “Demonica” e “Lords of Deliverance” come un’unica serie. Con “Reaver” che uscirà negli USA questo inverno, continuo a dire ai lettori che devono leggere la serie “Lords of Deliverance” per capire “Reaver”. Se i lettori hanno letto solo i libri di “Demonica”, si sentiranno completamente persi se prenderanno “Reaver”. Spero che i lettori italiani possano leggere “Reaver” presto!
COME MAI HAI SCELTO UNA SERIE DI ROMANZI RIGUARDANTI I DEMONI?
Beh, l’idea originale era di staffare l’Underworld Hospital con i vampiri, ma, in quel periodo JR Ward e Lara Adrian (scrittori urban fantasy/paranormal, ndr) stavano davvero decollando e non volevo essere indicata come una loro copia. Volevo fare qualcosa di diverso. I demoni non erano molto popolari al momento e ho iniziato a scrivere, ma è stato divertente perché in quel periodo uscì “Pleasure Unbound”, Gena Showalter e Jacqueline Frank (altre due scrittrici di genere, ndr) divennero molto popolari con i loro demoni!
UN’ALTRA IMPORTANTE SAGA E’ QUELLA SCRITTA CON LO PSEUDONIMO DI SYDNEY CROFT, NEL QUALE E’ COINVOLTA ANCHE LA SCRITTRICE STEPHANIE TYLER. COSA PUOI DIRCI IN MERITO A QUESTO PROGETTO?
Stephanie e io abbiamo scritto la serie “Acro” (“Agency of Covert Rare Operatives”, ndr) insieme – è una serie MOLTO erotica caratterizzata da umani con poteri soprannaturali. Lei di solito scrive le scene dal punto di vista degli uomini, e io scrivo quelle delle donne. Ci sono alcune eccezioni, ma così è come va di solito. Ci passiamo il libro avanti e indietro, leggendo quello che ha scritto l’altra persona, e poi basta ripianare tutto. E’ un processo che funziona bene per noi.
COME MAI AVETE SCELTO DI USARE UNO PSEDONIMO E COME E’ NATO?
Stephanie e io abbiamo dovuto scegliere uno pseudonimo perché, al momento, non ci eravamo fatte ancora un nome per noi stesse. Abbiamo provato un sacco di cose diverse, dal mix dei nostri stessi nomi ai miscugli dei nomi dei nostri figli. Infine, abbiamo dato uno sguardo a quello che scriviamo e ai nomi fittizi in simili generi della TV e dei film. Ci è piaciuta molto Lara Croft dei videogiochi e dei film, e Sydney Bristow della serie tv “Alias”. Così abbiamo mescolato quei nomi, e Sydney Croft è nata!
RECENTEMENTE I TUOI LIBRI SONO STATI TRADOTTI IN ITALIA. COSA NE PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?
Lo amo! Ricevo tantissime lettere dai lettori italiani e il mio editore italiano addirittura mi ha chiesto di partecipare alla grande Fiera del Libro di Roma entro la fine dell’anno! Purtroppo, non sembra che ce la possa fare, ma ho in programma di visitare l’Italia al più presto. E’ sulla mia lista dei posti che devo vedere. Dovrei ambientare un libro in Italia, così potrei chiamare la mia visita un viaggio d’affari! :)
ORA UNA DOMANDA IN GENERALE. DOVE TROVI L’ISPIRAZIONE PER TUTTE LE TUE STORIE?
Trovo l’ispirazione intorno a me, dai miei amici e dalla mia famiglia, fino ai perfetti sconosciuti, la Tv e i film. Anche le news stimolano l’immaginazione.
I TUOI LIBRI HANNO LA GIUSTA DOSE DI AVVENTURA, AMORE, EROTISMO, PASSIONE, HORROR E URBAN FANTASY: UN MIX VINCENTE, NON TROVI?
Beh, mi piace che l’hai detto! :) In verità, l’obiettivo è quello di colpire tutte le note giuste nel giusto equilibrio, ma non funziona per tutti i lettori. Ma io scrivo quello che *a me* piace leggere, e questo significa una forte dose di oscurità, il sarcasmo e l’erotismo!

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S LARISSA IONE?
First, I want to thank you for having me! Okay, so who am I? Mostly, I’m a big dork. I love books, animals, movies, and video games. I also love Star Trek and science fiction conventions, so yep, I’m a big dork.
HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?
I started writing as a child, so I always knew I wanted to be an author. But it wasn’t until I read a romance novel at the age of 24 that I knew I wanted to write romance. Before that I’d tried my hand at horror and fantasy, but after I fell in love with the romance genre, I realized I could mix what I’d already been writing with romantic relationships.
YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE DIVIDED IN THREE DIFFERENT SAGAS. FIRST OF ALL, CAN YOU TELL US ANYTHING ABOUT “MOONBOUND CLAN VAMPIRES” SERIES?
This is a new series in which vampires have been enslaved by humans. But some vampires live free, and they’re struggling to stay that way. The free vampires live in clans, much the way Native Americans did centuries ago…and that’s because the vampire virus began within Native American populations.
HOW DID YOU INVENT THE STORY AND HOW IT HAS DEVELOPED THE SAGA?
I came up with the series idea a long time ago, but I can’t say exactly what sparked it. One day it was just there. But I had been wanting to use Native American lore in a series for a long time, so this was the perfect way to do that.
WHAT DO WE HAVE TO EXPECT FROM THE FUTURE OF THIS SAGA?
Lots of twists and turns! The truth of the vampire virus will be revealed, as well as how the vampires came to be taken as slaves. Readers will also witness the fall of vampire slavery.
ANOTHER IMPORTANT AND FAMOUS SERIES, THE LONGEST OF ALL, IS THE “DEMONICA/LORDS OF DELIVERANCE” ONE: WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT?
The “Demonica” books have been described as “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” meets “E.R.” (“E.R.” is a medical television drama, in case you aren’t familiar.) The description is pretty accurate, given that the initial spark of the idea for my series came from an episode of “Angel”, in which Angel, a vampire, was severely injured. He needed a hospital, but as a vampire, he couldn’t go to one for help. So I created one. I staffed Underworld General Hospital with demons, vampires, and werewolves, and then made sure that there would be lots of species conflict. And, naturally, these demons have enemies in the human demon slayers who hunt them.
In the fifth book in the series, “Sin Undone”, the heroine, Sin, accidentally unleashes the First Horseman of the Apocalypse on the world, which kicks off the “Lords of Deliverance” series. In the “Lords of Deliverance” series, readers get to know the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but it’s set in the “Demonica world”, so the “Demonica” characters play huge roles. In fact, I really see the “Demonica” and “Lords of Deliverance” series to be one series. With REAVER coming out in the US this winter, I keep telling readers that they HAVE to read the “Lords of Deliverance” series in order to understand REAVER. If readers have only read the “Demonica” books, they will be utterly lost if they pick up REAVER. I hope Italian readers will get to read REAVER soon!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A SERIES OF NOVELS ABOUT DEMONS?
Well, the original idea was to staff the Underworld Hospital with vampires, but at the time, JR Ward and Lara Adrian were really taking off, and I didn’t want to come across as a copy of them. I wanted to do something different. Demons weren’t really popular at the time I started writing, but it was funny because by the time Pleasure Unbound came out, Gena Showalter and Jacqueline Frank were very popular with their demons!
ANOTHER IMPORTANT SAGA IS THE ONE WRITTEN BY THE PSEUDONYM OF SYDNEY CROFT, IN WHICH IS INVOLVED ALSO THE WRITER STEPHANIE TYLER. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS PROJECT?
Stephanie and I write the ACRO series together – it’s a VERY erotic series that features humans with supernatural powers. She usually writes the scenes in the male point-of-view, and I write the female’s. There are some exceptions, but that’s generally how it goes. We just pass the book back and forth, reading what the other person wrote, and then just write off that. It’s a process that works well for us.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO USE A PSEUDONYM AND HOW WAS IT BORN? Stephanie and I had to choose a pseudonym because at the time, we hadn’t made names for ourselves. We tried a lot of different things, from mixes of our own names to mixes of our kids’ names. Finally, we took a look at what we write and the fictional names in similar genres of TV and movies. We loved Lara Croft from video games and the movies, and Sydney Bristow from the TV show Alias. So we mixed those names up, and Sydney Croft was born!
RECENTLY YOUR BOOKS ARE TRANSLATED IN ITALY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY?
I love it! I get so many letters from Italian readers, and my Italian publisher even asked me to attend the big book fair in Rome later this year! Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like I can make it, but I do plan to visit Italy soon. It’s on my list of places I have to see. I might have to set a book in Italy so I can call my visit a business trip! :)
NOW, A GENERAL QUESTION. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR STORIES?
I find inspiration all around me, from my friends and family, to complete strangers, to TV and movies. Even the news feeds the imagination.
YOUR BOOKS HAVE THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF ADVENTURE, LOVE, EROTICISM, PASSION, HORROR AND URBAN FANTASY: A WINNING MIX, DON’T YOU THINK?
Well, I love that you said that! :) Truly, it’s a goal to hit all the right notes in the right balance, but it doesn’t work for all readers. But I write what *I* like to read, and that means a heavy dose of darkness, sarcasm, and eroticism!
