Jeff Strand, classe 1970, è nato a Baltimore nel Maryland. Ha scritto diversi racconti, pubblicati in varie antologie, è stato finalista quattro volte al prestigioso “Bram Stoker Award” e ha all’attivo molti romanzi, tra i quali “Pressure”, “Dweller” (che verrà pubblicato in Italia il prossimo anno da Mezzotints Ebook), “Mandibles”, “Wolf Hunt” e “Fangboy”. La sua ultima raccolta di racconti è “Dead Clown Barbecue”… e noi abbiamo ora il piacere e l’onore di presentarvi la lunga chiacchierata che ce lo ha fatto conoscere. Ora tocca a voi saperne qualcosa di più.
PENSO CHE POSSIAMO COMINCIARE DALL’INIZIO: CHI E’ JEFF STRAND?
E’ un ragazzo magro che vive in Florida e scrive libri divertenti/spaventosi. Vive con la moglie e due gatti e beve troppo soda. Ha un albero di arancio nel suo cortile, che sta guardando proprio ora, ma le arance che produce sono amare e sgradevoli.
COME HAI INIZIATO A SCRIVERE?
Ho voluto scrivere praticamente da che io riesca a ricordare. Non mi sono sempre concentrato sui romanzi – in diversi momenti ho voluto scrivere fumetti, film, videogiochi, e varie altre cose, e non mi sono veramente concentrato sui libri fino a quando non ho venduto il mio primo romanzo! Ma dal momento che le mie dita hanno potuto effettivamente avvolgersi intorno a una matita, non c’è mai stato un periodo della mia vita in cui non abbia voluto fare lo scrittore.
VUOI PARLARCI DEI TUOI LAVORI PRECEDENTI?
Ho scritto una ventina di libri. Alcuni sono per lo più commedie (A Bad Day For Voodoo, The Sinister Mr. Corpse), altri sono per lo più horror (Pressure, Dweller) e la maggior parte sono una miscela equilibrata dei due elementi (Wolf Hunt, Stalking You Now).
E QUAL E’ IL TUO PREFERITO?
Cambia tutte le volte. In realtà non ho un libro di cui dico “Questo è il mio ultimo capolavoro, e tutto il resto fa schifo!”. Tuttavia, nel momento in cui sto rispondendo a questa domanda il mio preferito tra i miei libri è probabilmente Dweller, che parla dell’amicizia tra un ragazzo e un mostro nel bosco che dura da più di cinquant’anni.
ZOMBIE, VAMPIRI, LUPI MANNARI, SERIAL KILLER, INSETTI GIGANTI, MOSTRI: HAI USATO TUTTE LE ICONE DEL GENERE HORROR, MA TU HAI DATO LORO QUALCOSA IN PIU’. QUAL E’ IL TUO PREFERITO FRA QUESTI?
I serial killer sono l’unica icona del genere che ho usato in più libri, e quasi sicuramente tornerò di nuovo da loro. Quindi credo che loro siano i miei preferiti per il mio lavoro. Ma quando guardo i film o leggo un libro di qualcun altro, sono un ragazzo zombie.
IL TUO LIBRO PIU’ RECENTE È LA RACCOLTA DI RACCONTI “DEAD CLOWN BARBECUE”. COSA PUOI DIRCI AL RIGUARDO?
Contiene ventinove storie, sette delle quali sono state scritte apposta per la raccolta. Nel complesso, la descriverei come una raccolta di “horror/commedia”, anche se le storie seguono una gamma che va dal ridicolo e sciocco allo squallido e deprimente. Ci sono storie di manichini ventriloqui, vampiri giganti, l’apocalisse, sinistre nonne morte, piante carnivore e antiche rovine maledette. Divertimento per tutti!
CON I TUOI LIBRI SEI STATO IN NOMINATION A NUMEROSI PREMI. VUOI DIRCI COME CI SI SENTE QUANDO SI VEDE CHE LE PROPRIE “CREATURE” SONO COSI’ POPOLARI E APPREZZATE?
Sono stato candidato per il “Premio Bram Stoker” quattro volte, ma tre di quelle volte sono stato anche Maestro di Cerimonia del banchetto di premiazione. Così sono stato talmente distratto dai miei doveri di ospite che non ho nemmeno pensato di essere lì per il premio stesso! I premi sono sempre un onore, anche se mi concentro di più sulle recensioni positive e le lettere dei fan.
IL PROSSIMO ANNO I TUOI LIBRI SARANNO TRADOTTI IN ITALIA. COSA PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?
Non ho mai avuto la fortuna di viaggiare al di fuori del Nord America, ma non vedo l’ora un giorno di venire nel tuo paese e aumentare 45 libbre (circa 20 kg, ndr) in una settimana per il vostro cibo delizioso!
ORA, UNA DOMANDA GENERALE. DOVE TROVI L’ISPIRAZIONE PER TUTTE LE TUE STORIE?
Varia molto da storia a storia. Per me, è molto raro che una buona idea salti fuori così nella mia testa, o che legga un articolo e dica “Questo potrebbe essere un romanzo!”. Di solito è più metodico. Passo molto tempo a fare brainstorming e a compilare delle liste prima di tirar fuori un’idea per una storia. Molti scrittori dicono che loro hanno più idee per un libro di quanto potrebbero mai scrivere in una vita, ma per me, l’idea di base è spesso la parte più difficile!
HAI SCRITTO SIA ROMANZI CHE RACCONTI: QUALE PREFERISCI E QUALI SONO LE DIFFERENZE TRA QUESTI DUE METODI DI SCRITTURA?
Preferisco scrivere romanzi. Ho scritto un sacco di storie brevi, ma quasi tutte sono state scritte quando un editore mi ha chiesto qualcosa. Non ho mai detto “Va bene, ho intenzione di scrivere un racconto oggi!”. La più grande differenza è che devo concentrarmi di più su una specifica idea intelligente quando faccio un racconto breve (e come ho detto nella mia risposta precedente, far venir fuori l’idea di base è la parte più impegnativa!), mentre con un romanzo ho più spazio per respirare. Devo dire che i miei racconti sono tra i miei migliori testi scritti!

PARLANDO DI CINEMA, DOBBIAMO ASPETTARCI QUALCHE LAVORO (FILM O SERIE TV) DAI TUOI LIBRI? O FORSE FUMETTI O VIDEOGIOCHI?
Pressure è l’unico libro attualmente in programma per un adattamento cinematografico. Ho scritto la sceneggiatura per il primo numero di una serie originale a fumetti chiamato Town of Turmoil ma sono stato troppo impegnato in realtà per farci qualcosa. Oltre a questo, ci sono i bocconcini occasionali di interesse nel trasformare i miei libri in film, ma non è venuto niente da loro… ancora!
ULTIMA DOMANDA. CHE PROGETTI HAI PER IL FUTURO E QUALI SONO I TUOI SOGNI?
Onestamente, solo continuare a scrivere più libri. Libri più grandi. Libri migliori. Per un pubblico in continua crescita! (Okay, e avere un film fatto da uno di loro sarebbe bello…).

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S JEFF STRAND?
He’s this skinny guy who lives in Florida and writes funny/scary books. He lives with his wife and two cats and he drinks too much soda. He’s got an orange tree in his backyard, and he’s looking at it right now, but the oranges it produces are bitter and nasty.
HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?
I’ve wanted to write for literally as long as I can remember. I wasn’t always focused on novels–at various times I wanted to write comics, movies, video games, and various other things, and I didn’t truly focus on books until I sold my first novel! But from the time that my fingers could actually wrap around a pencil, there has never been a time in my life that I didn’t want to be a writer.
DO YOU WANT TO SPEAK US ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS WORKS?
I’ve written about twenty books. Some are mostly comedy (A Bad Day For Voodoo, The Sinister Mr. Corpse), some are mostly horror (Pressure, Dweller) and most are a balanced mixture of the two elements (Wolf Hunt, Stalking You Now).
AND WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVOURITE?
It changes all the time. I don’t really have a book where I say “This is my ultimate masterpiece, and everything else SUCKS!!!”. However, at the time that I’m answering this question my favorite of my books is probably Dweller, which is about a friendship between a boy and a monster in the woods that lasts for over fifty years.
ZOMBIES, VAMPIRES, WEREWOLVES, SERIAL KILLERS, GIANT INSECTS, MONSTERS: YOU USED ALL THE ICONS OF HORROR GENRE, BUT YOU GAVE THEM SOMETHING MORE. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OF THESE?
Serial killers are the only genre icon I’ve used in multiple books, and I’ll almost definitely return to them again. So I guess they’re my favorite for my own work. But when I’m watching movies or reading somebody else’s book, I’m a zombie guy.
YOUR MOST RECENT BOOK IS THE SHORT STORY COLLECTION “DEAD CLOWN BARBECUE”. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT IT?
It has twenty-nine stories, seven of which were written just for the collection. Overall, I’d describe it as a “horror/comedy” collection, though the stories run the range from ridiculous and silly to bleak and depressing. It’s got stories about ventriloquist dummies, giant vampires, the apocalypse, spooky dead grandmothers, flesh-eating plants, and cursed ancient ruins. Fun for everybody!
WITH YOUR BOOKS YOU’VE BEEN NOMINATED FOR MANY AWARDS. DO YOU WANT TO TELL US WHAT DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SEE THAT YOUR “CREATURES” ARE SO POPULAR AND APPRECIATED?
I’ve been nominated for the “Bram Stoker Award” four times, but three of those times I was also Master of Ceremonies at the awards banquet. So I’ve been so distracted by my hosting duties that I don’t even think about being up for the award itself! Awards are always an honor, though I focus more on good reviews and fan mail.
NEXT YEAR YOUR BOOKS WILL BE TRANSLATED IN ITALY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY?
I’ve never had the good fortune of traveling outside of North America, but I look forward to someday coming to your country and gaining 45 pounds in a week from your delicious food!
NOW, A GENERAL QUESTION. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR STORIES?
It varies a lot from story to story. For me, it’s very rare for a good idea to just pop into my head, or to read a news article and say “This should be a novel!”. It’s usually more methodical. I’ll spend a lot of time brainstorming and making lists before I work out a story idea. Many writers say that they’ve got more book ideas than they could ever write in a lifetime, but for me, the basic idea is often the most difficult part!
YOU WROTE BOTH NOVELS AND SHORT STORIES: WHAT DO YOU PREFER AND WHICH ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THESE TWO METHODS OF WRITING?
I prefer writing novels. I’ve written a lot of short stories, but almost all of them were written when an editor asked me for something. I never really say “Okay, I’m going to write a short story today!”. The biggest difference is that I have to focus more on a specific clever idea when I do a short story (and like I said in my previous answer, coming up with the basic concept is the most challenging part!) whereas with a novel I have more room to breathe. I will say that my short stories have some of my best writing!

Pressure is the only book currently slated for a movie adaptation. I’ve written the script to the first issue of an original comic book series called Town of Turmoil but I’ve been too busy to actually do anything with it. Beyond that, there are the occasional nibbles of interest in turning my books into movies, but nothing has come of them…yet!
THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?
Honestly, just to keep writing more books. Bigger books. Better books. For a constantly growing readership! (Okay, and having a movie made out of one of them would be nice…).
