Thea Harrison è lo pseudonimo della scrittrice Teddy Harrison. Ha imparato a leggere da sola a quattro anni e ha scritto il suo primo romanzo a diciannove, con il nome di Amanda Carpenter. Ha conseguito ben due lauree e fatto mille mestieri prima di diventare scrittrice full time. Ha vissuto a lungo in Inghilterra, ma ora vive in Colorado. I suoi libri l’hanno portata in vetta alle classifiche del New York Times e di Usa Today e ha vinto il “RITA Award” e numerosi altri riconoscimenti. Abbiamo avuto il piacere di incontrarla per voi… un’intervista assolutamente da non perdere, in pieno stile La Zona Morta.

CIAO THEA, PENSO CHE POSSIAMO COMINCIARE DALL’INIZIO: CHI E’ THEA HARRISON?

Ciao Davide, grazie per ospitarmi sul tuo blog! Scrivo paranormal romance, urban fantasy e altre cose. Ho messo questo sul mio sito web, ed è una storia vera: ho imparato da sola a leggere quando avevo quattro anni. Quello è stato all’incirca il periodo in cui ho cercato di guidare il mio triciclo per andare a lavorare. Non ero sicura di dove il lavoro sarebbe stato, ma sapevo che doveva essere interessante se la gente ci andava ogni giorno. Ora combino il mio amore per i libri con il lavoro e non ho bisogno di cavalcare il mio triciclo per arrivarci! Ho iniziato a scrivere romanzi quando avevo diciannove anni. Ho preso una pausa di circa 13 anni e sono andata a scuola. Dopo la laurea, l’economia ha subito una grave recessione, e ho scritto il primo della serie de “Le Razze Antiche”, “Il legame del drago”, mentre ero alla ricerca di lavoro. Ora sono felice di scrivere a tempo pieno di nuovo.

COME HAI INIZIATO A SCRIVERE?

Da adolescente, ho iniziato a leggere romanzi a casa di mia zia in campagna. Ho sempre sentito che avrei potuto scriverli io, se mi fosse stata data una possibilità. Quando avevo diciannove anni ho comprato una piccola macchina da scrivere elettrica, scrissi il mio primo libro e venne accettato dalla Harlequin Mills & Boon nel Regno Unito. Mi sono sempre sentita come se avessi vinto la lotteria!

I TUOI LIBRI PIU’ FAMOSI SONO DIVISI IN DUE SAGHE DIVERSE. PRIMA DI TUTTO , PUOI DIRCI QUALCOSA SU “LE RAZZE ANTICHE” E SU COME HAI INVENTATO LA STORIA?

Ho inventato il mondo delle razze Antiche nel momento in cui ho scritto “Il legame del drago”. Non avevo pianificato una serie, e non avevo enormi speranze – avevo solo scritto il libro e costruito il mondo nel momento in cui lo scrivevo. Al più, speravo che qualcuno potesse essere interessato a un sequel, un giorno. Sono stata completamente basita quando il mio editor alla Berkley Publishing mi fece un contratto per tre libri!

UN’ALTRA SERIE IMPORTANTE E FAMOSA E’ “THE GAME OF SHADOWS”: COSA PUOI DIRCI IN MERITO E COME TI E’ VENUTA L’IDEA?

Quando sono tornato al college, ho studiato un sacco di filosofia, studi religiosi e corsi di mitologia. Durante tutta la mia vita, ho anche amato leggere fantascienza, fantasy e paranormal romance. Mentre ero ancora a scuola, mi sono venute un sacco di immagini e idee da tutti questi generi, e, a differenza di “Il legame del drago” e della serie di “Le Razze Antiche”, ho costruito prima il mondo e poi scritto la storia. Non era molto buona, e la storia ha dovuto passare attraverso diverse bozze prima che fosse vendibile. Sono entusiasta che finalmente ha trovato una casa ed è stata pubblicata!

RECENTEMENTE I TUOI LIBRI SONO STATI TRADOTTI IN ITALIA. COSA PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?

Amo tutto ciò che riguarda l’Italia, anche se purtroppo non ho avuto la possibilità di visitarla ancora! Spero che la cosa cambi molto presto nei prossimi anni. :)

IN QUESTI ANNI HAI SEMPRE AVUTO UNA PREDILEZIONE PER IL FANTASTICO. CHE SIGNIFICATO HA PER TE QUESTA TEMATICA?

Io amo i mondi della fantasia. Da bambina ho letto tutto quello che potevo sulla mitologia e sui mondi fantasy, e ora da adulta mi ritrovo a scrivere di mondi fantastici. Non potrei essere più felice!

ORA UNA DOMANDA GENERALE. DOVE TROVI L’ISPIRAZIONE PER TUTTE LE TUE STORIE?

Amo leggere tutto quello su cui posso mettere le mani, e guardo tutti i telefilm e i film di fantascienza e fantasy. E’ anche molto stimolante viaggiare in nuovi, differenti luoghi.

QUALI SONO I TUOI SCRITTORI PREFERITI?

Ce ne sono così tanti! Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Lisa Kleypas, Iain Banks solo per citarne alcuni. Penso che ci siano un sacco di scrittori di talento e innovativi che stanno lavorando in questo momento. E’ un buon momento per essere un lettore.

E I TUOI FILM PREFERITI?

Sicuramente Avatar e Al di là dei sogni.

PARLANDO CINEMA, DOBBIAMO ASPETTARCI QUALCHE LAVORO (FILM O SERIE TV ) DAI TOUI LIBRI? O FORSE FUMETTI O VIDEOGIOCHI?

Vorrei! Ma, no, non ci sono offerte per serie TV o un film, o fumetti o dei videogiochi. Ma tengo le dita incrociate che succeda un giorno!

L’ULTIMA DOMANDA. QUALI PROGETTI HAI PER IL FUTURO E QUALI SONO I TUOI SOGNI ?

Oggi ho firmato i contratti per altri tre libri della serie “Le Razze Antiche”, quindi dovrò sicuramente scriverò più libri. Il 25 novembre, distribuirò il mio primo progetto autopubblicato, una novella di “Le Razze Antiche”, “Dragos Takes a Holiday”. Sto anche lavorando su un nuovo progetto di serie, ma ho paura che sia meglio mantenere il segreto sui dettagli fino a quando sarà messo in vendita. C’è un sacco di buon lavoro davanti a me nei prossimi anni… e non vedo l’ora di condividerlo con i lettori.

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S THEA HARRISON?

Hi Davide, thanks for having me on your blog! I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy and other stuff. I have this on my website, and it’s a true story: I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn’t sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don’t have to ride my tricycle to get there! I started writing romances when I was nineteen. I took a break of about 13 years and went to graduate school. After I graduated, the economy took a serious downturn, and I wrote the first in the “Elder Races series”, “Dragon Bound”, while I was looking for work. Now I’m thrilled to be writing full time again.

HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?

As a teenager, I started reading romances at my aunt’s house in the country. I always felt like I write them, if I was given a chance. When I was nineteen I bought a small electric typewriter, wrote my first book and it was accepted by Harlequin Mills & Boon in the UK. I have always felt like I won the lottery!

YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE DIVIDED IN TWO DIFFERENT SAGAS. FIRST OF ALL, CAN YOU TELL US ANYTHING ABOUT “THE ELDER RACES” AND HOW DID YOU INVENTED THE STORY?

I invented the Elder Races world as I wrote “Dragon Bound”. I didn’t plan on a series, or have huge hopes – I just wrote the book and built the world as I wrote it. At the most, I hoped that someone might be interested in a sequel someday. I was utterly thrilled when my editor at Berkley Publishing made a three book contract!

ANOTHER IMPORTANT AND FAMOUS SERIES IS “THE GAME OF SHADOWS”: WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT AND HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA?

When I went back to college, I took a lot of philosophy, religious studies and mythology courses. All my life, I’ve also loved reading science fiction, fantasy and paranormal romance. While I was still in school, I had lots of images and ideas from all these classes, and, unlike “Dragon Bound” and the “Elder Races” series, I built the world first then wrote the story. It wasn’t very good, and the story had to go through several drafts before it was saleable. I’m thrilled that it finally found a home and got published!

RECENTLY YOUR BOOKS ARE TRANSLATED IN ITALY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY?

I love everything about Italy, although unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to visit yet!  I hope to change that very soon in the next few years. :)

IN THESE YEARS YOU ALWAYS HAD A PREDILECTION FOR THE AMAZING. WHAT’S THE MEANING FOR YOU OF THIS TOPIC?

I simply love worlds of the imagination. As a child I read everything I could about mythology and fantasy worlds, and now as an adult I get to write about fantastic worlds. I couldn’t be happier!

NOW, A GENERAL QUESTION. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE ISPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR STORIES?

I love to read everything I can get my hands on, and I watch all the science fiction and fantasy TV shows and movies. It’s also very inspiring to travel to new, different places.

WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS?

There are so many!  Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Lisa Kleypas, Iain Banks are just to name a few. I think there are a lot of talented and innovative writers working right now. It’s a good time to be a reader.

AND YOUR FAVORITE FILMS?

Definitely Avatar and What Dreams May Come.

SPEAKING ABOUT CINEMA, DO WE HAVE TO EXPECT ANY WORKS (FILM OR TV SERIES) FROM YOUR BOOKS? OR MAYBE COMICS OR VIDEOGAMES?

I wish! But, no, we don’t have any offers for TV or film, or comics or videogames. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it does happen someday!

THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?

Today I signed the contracts for three more in the “Elder Races” series, so I’ll definitely be writing more books. On November 25th, I’m releasing my first self published project, an “Elder Races” novella, “Dragos Takes A Holiday”.  I’m also working on a new series concept, but I’m afraid I’d better keep secret about the details until that sells. There’s a lot of good work ahead of me in the next few years… and I can’t wait to share it with readers.
