Abbiamo parlato qualche tempo fa del nuovo lavoro degli AnamA, band heavy metal con tematiche horror molto accentuate, in merito alla pubblicazione del loro nuovo brano, con relativo videoclip, dedicato alla figura di Jack lo Squartatore e a una strana leggenda, tutta sudamericana, che lo riguarda. Siamo andati, virtualmente, oltreoceano e abbiamo avuto modo di incontrare Babi Bueno, la front-woman della band, per farci raccontare un po’ di loro. Ecco cosa ne è venuto fuori.

PENSO CHE POSSIAMO COMINCIARE DAL PRINCIPIO: CHI SONO GLI ANAMA E QUAL E’ LA VOSTRA STORIA?

AnamA è una metal band brasiliana prog/sinfonica. Abbiamo iniziato questo progetto nel 2011 con me, Babi Bueno, e Caio Garibaldi. Nikolas ci ha raggiunti nel 2017, alla fine delle registrazioni del nostro primo album. Da allora abbiamo suonato in moltissimi pub. Per molto tempo, tutti noi abbiamo suonato in tribute band, ma… Beh, era noioso. Oggi vogliamo suonare diversi brani, elementi e strumenti. Così sono sorti gli AnamA.

COME HAI COMINCIATO A FARE MUSICA?

Quando avevo 14 anni. Suonavo la chitarra acustica. Ma due anni dopo alcuni amici mi dissero che ero una buona cantante (meglio che come chitarrista). Così ho fondato la mia prima rock band a 16 anni. Da allora ho studiato canto (belcanto) e pianoforte. Ho scoperto le “pulsioni vocali” e “il cantilenare”. Beh, eccomi qua, come cantante e tastierista degli AnamA.

VUOI PARLARCI DEI VOSTRI PRECEDENTI LAVORI?

Il nostro primo album, realizzato nel 2017, era un album sperimentale. Abbiamo provato un sacco di riferimenti. Solitamente diciamo che abbiamo fatto “un viaggio intorno al mondo” con le nostre canzoni: influenze industrial metal, flamenco, power metal… Ma uno dei nostri più grandi successi è “Poltergeist”, un brano horror.

COME DEFINIRESTE LA VOSTRA MUSICA E COSA DEVE ASPETTARSI CHI VIENE A VEDERE I VOSTRI LIVE?

Oggi penso che abbiamo optato per le tematiche oscure. Le nostre sonorità sono molto dark, heavy e progressive. Stiamo già pensando al nostro prossimo album. Ci sono molte idee, forse Fanta, forse Scienza… Tutto ciò potrebbe essere spaventoso.

DOVE TROVATE L’ISPIRAZIONE PER LE VOSTRE CANZONI E CHI SONO LE VOSTRE ICONE MUSICALI?

Amo l’opera… mi piace molto il “dramma lirico”. Come cantante adoro Loreena McKennitt, Tarja Turunen, i Deep Purple, Freddie Mercury, Dio e Andre Matos. Come compositrice… penso che tutte le canzoni degli AnamA siano sinestetiche, puoi ascoltare, sentire e guardare una storia.

RECENTEMENTE AVETE PUBBLICATO LA VOSTRA NUOVA CANZONE E IL VIDEOCLIP, “THE TALE IF THE RIPPER”, CHE CI DITE IN MERITO?

Come dice il titolo, è una canzone su Jack lo Squartatore. Tuttavia, in Brasile, c’è un racconto diverso al riguardo. Esiste un piccolo villaggio inglese chiamato Paranapiacaba a San Paolo. Costruito nel 19° Secolo, ha accolto migliaia di lavoratori di una ferrovia. Secondo il racconto, Jack lo Squartatore sarebbe scappato da Londra a Paranapiacaba.

QUALI SONO STATE LE DIFFICOLTA’ CHE AVETE INCONTRATO NELLA REALIZZAZIONE DEL PROGETTO?

Siamo un trio! Ciò è fantastico, perché le nostre decisioni sono molto, molto semplici. Ma è difficile perché siamo sempre sovraccarichi. Per fortuna siamo musicisti e amici.

IN QUESTI ANNI SPESSO AVETE AVUTO UNA PREDILEZIONE PER LE TEMATICHE HORROR. CHE SIGNIFICATO HA PER VOI QUESTO GENERE?

Adoro l’horror. Davvero. Lo amo! Penso che sia un modo per riflettere sulla nostra empatia, sulle paure e sull’angoscia.

QUALI SONO I VOSTRI SCRITTORI E I VOSTRI FILM PREFERITI?

Oh, sia io che Caio… amiamo Anne Rice. A lui piace molto una scrittrice brasiliana, Giulia Moon. Io sto leggendo un libro, “Sete” (“Sette”) di Andre Vianco. Beh, ci piacciono i vampiri (i vampiri cattivi). Ma mi piacciono anche le storie del Ciclo Arturiano. Il nostro primo album contiene una canzone, “Mr. Brave”, riguardante “Arancia Meccanica”.

L’ULTIMA DOMANDA. CHE PROGETTI AVETE PER IL FUTURO E QUALI SONO I VOSTRI SOGNI NEL CASSETTO?

Realizzeremo ancora due nuove canzoni una con un video musicale e l’altra con un video con il testo (un’altra storia horror!!!). Faranno parte del nostro EP: “Tales of Doubt and Death”.

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO ARE ANAMA AND WHICH IS YOUR STORY?

AnamA is a Brazilian prog/symphonic metal band. We have started this project in 2011 with me, Babi Bueno and Caio Garibaldi. Nikolas has joined us in 2017, at the end of our first album recordings. Since then, we have been playing in a lot of pubs. For a long time, all of us, played in tributes band, but… Well, it was boring. Today, we want to play different songs, elements and instruments. So, AnamA arose.

HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO PLAY MUSIC?

When I was 14. I used to play acoustic guitar. But 2 years later some friends told me that I was a good singer (better than a guitar player). So, I joint to my first rock band at 16. Since then, I had studied Singing (belcanto) and piano. I have discovered “vocal drives” and “Belting”. Well, here I am, as singer and keyboarder of AnamA.

DO YOU WANT TO SPEAK US ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS WORKS?

Our first album, released in 2017, is an experimental album. We tried a lot of references. We used to say that we did a “travel around the world” with our songs: industrial metal influences, flamenco, power metal… But one of our enormous success is “Poltergeist”, a horror song.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR MUSIC AND WHAT MUST TO EXPECT WHO COMES TO SEE YOUR LIVES?

Today, I think we have decided for obscure themes. Our sonority is very dark, heavy and progressive. We are already thinking about our next album. There are a lot of ideas, maybe Fiction, maybe Science… All of this could be scary.

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR SONGS AND WHO ARE YOUR MUSIC ICONS?

I like opera… I really like the “lyric drama”. As a singer, I like Loreena McKennitt, Tarja Turunen, Deep Purple, Freddie Mercury, Dio and Andre Matos. As a composer… I think all AnamA’s songs are synesthetic, you can hear, feel and watch a chronicle.

RECENTLY YOU PUBLISHED YOUR NEW SONG AND VIDEOCLIP, “THE TALE OF THE RIPPER”. WHAT ABOUT IT?

As the name says, it’s a song about Jack the Ripper. However, in Brazil, there’s a different tale about that. There’s a small English village called Paranapiacaba in São Paulo. Built in 19th century, sheltered thousands of workers of a railway. According the tale, Jack, the ripper, had run from London to Paranapiacaba.

WHICH WERE THE DIFFICULTIES YOU MET WITH THE CREATION OF THIS PROJECT?

We are a trio! This is amazing, because our decisions are very, very simple. But is difficult because we are always overloaded. Fortunately, we are musicians AND friends.

IN THESE YEARS YOU OFTEN HAD A PREDILECTION FOR HORROR THEMES. WHAT’S THE MEANING OF THIS GENRE FOR YOU?

I love horror. Really. I love it! I think it’s a way to reflective about our empathy, fears and anguish.

WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS AND FILMS?

Oh, me and Caio… We love Anne Rice. He loves a Brazilian writer, Giulia Moon. I’m reading a book, “Sete” (Seven) – Andre Vianco. Well, we like vampires (bad vampires). But I also like the arthurian’s stories. Our first album has one song, “Mr. Brave”, about the “Orange Clockwork”.

THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?

This we’ll release another 2 new songs with one music video and the other with lyric video (another horror story!!!). They will be part of our EP: “Tales of Doubt and Death”.
