E’ considerata la “regina degli zombi letterari”, ma Rhiannon Frater non è solo questo: ha vinto due “Dead Letter Award” ed è stata recentemente nominata anche al “Bram Stoker Award”, ha scritto pure molte storie di vampiri, parecchi suoi lavori sono stati opzionati per la televisione e per il cinema… insomma, è un’autrice del fantastico a 360 gradi. Potremmo dire che Rhiannon Frater sta alla letteratura zombi, come George A. Romero sta al cinema zombi… ma non lo diremo, lasceremo invece che sia lei a dirci qualcosa, visto che siamo riusciti a raggiungerla nel lontano Texas (virtualmente s’intende) per intervistarla… sentiamo cosa ci ha raccontato.

COMINCIAMO DAL PRINCIPIO: CHI E’ RHIANNON FRATER?

Sono una donna del Texas che ama scrivere storie molto terrificanti con personaggi fantastici.

COME HAI INIZIATO A SCRIVERE?

Fin da quando ho imparato a parlare, ho raccontato storie. Fin da quando ho imparato a scrivere, ho scritto storie. Penso che sia solo una parte di me.

LA TUA OPERA PIU’ FAMOSA E’ LA TRILOGIA DE “L’ERA DEL MONDO MORTO”. VUOI PARLARCENE?

Certo! All’inizio scrissi un serial sugli zombie online che divenne molto popolare. Lo autopubblicai in tre libri che in seguito vennero presi dalla Tor (e in Italia, il primo libro è stato acquistato da Delos Books). I tre libri sono “The first days” (in italiano pubblicato come “Il primo giorno”, ndr), “Fighting to survive” (che si potrebbe tradurre come “Combattere per sopravvivere”, ndr) e “Siege” (in italiano “Assedio”, ndr). Il nome della trilogia è “As the world dies” (tradotto in italiano con “L’era del mondo morto”, ndr).

VUOI DIRCI QUALCOSA DEGLI ALTRI TUOI LAVORI?

Ho scritto anche altri romanzi: un romanzo ambientato ai giorni nostri con vampiri, zombi e negromanti intitolato “Pretty when she dies” (in italiano “Graziosa quando muore”, ndr), una serie horror gotica vampirica ambientata a Buda in Ungheria nel 1820 intitolata “The tale of the vampire bride” (“Il racconto della moglie del vampiro”, ndr) e il suo seguito “The vengeance of the vampire bride” (“La vendetta della moglie del vampiro”, ndr), un libro per giovani fan degli zombi intitolato “The living dead boy and the zombie hunters” (“Il giovane morto vivente e i cacciatori di zombi”, ndr), oltre a due volumi di storie brevi in “As the world dies untold tales volume 1 and 2” (“I racconti mai narrati dell’era del mondo morto volume 1 e 2”, ndr). Il 12 giugno sarà pubblicato – negli Stati Uniti – il mio romanzo futuristico sugli zombi “The last bastion of the living” (“L’ultimo baluardo dei viventi”, ndr).

COME MAI HAI SCELTO UNA SERIE SUGLI ZOMBI?

Non l’ho fatto. La storia ha scelto me. L’ispirazione mi ha colpito e ho solo deciso di seguirla. Non ho mai pensato di scrivere un romanzo zombie, per non parlare di una trilogia.

COME HAI INVENTATO LA STORIA?

Non l’ho fatto. Ero al lavoro quando questa immagine forte di una donna in un accappatoio rosa in piedi davanti alla sua porta di casa sulla veranda è spuntata nella mia mente. Stava fissando la parte inferiore della porta d’ingresso e poi ho visto le dita piccole protendersi verso di lei all’interno. Ho capito poi che dovevo scriverlo.

QUALI SONO STATE LE DIFFICOLTA’ CHE HAI INCONTRATO NELLA CREAZIONE DEI PERSONAGGI E DELL’AMBIENTAZIONE?

La nascita dei personaggi è facile. Non appena appaiono, annunciano i loro nomi, e si adattano alla storia. È rappresentarli con precisione che a volte può risultare difficile. La bisessualità di Katie e i disturbi mentali di Jenni causati dal suo essere una casalinga maltrattata erano una sfida, a volte. Dal momento che l’impostazione è in Texas e io sono texana, è stato facile capire il mondo in cui vivono. Beh, eccetto la parte zombi…

CON QUESTA TRILOGIA HAI VINTO DUE “DEAD LETTER AWARD”. VUOI DIRCI COME E’ ANDATA?

E’ stato meraviglioso vincere il “Dead Letter Award” nel 2008 e nel 2009 per “Il primo giorno” e “Fighting to survive”. E’ stato un grande onore. “Il primo giorno” è stato inserito anche su un sacco di liste che lo nominavano tra i primi dieci romanzi zombi o romanzi post-apocalittici. Penso che uno dei miei onori preferiti sia stata una recensione da star del Publishers Weekly per “I primi giorni”. E’ stato come vincere un Oscar.

RECENTEMENTE I TUOI LIBRI SONO STATI TRADOTTI IN ITALIANO. COSA PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?

Un ramo del mio albero genealogico venne dall’Italia molto tempo fa, quindi ho un debole per l’Italia. Ho visitato il paese e mi è piaciuto! A quanto pare assomiglio un po’ ai miei antenati italiani perché mi hanno parlato in italiano per tutto il tempo. Sono stata quasi cacciata da un tour della città a Roma, perché la guida pensava che fossi un romano che cercava di sgattaiolare dentro. E’ stato divertente. Mia mamma mi aveva insegnato un po’ di italiano prima della nostra visita, così ho fatto un buon lavoro, a volte comunicando. Purtroppo, ho dimenticato tutto questo quando sono tornato in Texas. Devo dire che quando sono scesa dall’aereo a Roma, ho avuto questa sensazione davvero strana di tornare a casa. Mi sono sentita in questo modo per tutto il tempo che sono stata lì. E’ stato così strano. Continuavo a sentirmi come se fossi già stata lì prima e che avrei girato un angolo e trovato la mia casa. Da allora, sogno di vivere in Italia per una parte della mia vita. Spero che succeda.

IN QUESTI ANNI HAI SEMPRE AVUTO UNA PREDILEZIONE PER IL FANTASTICO. CHE SIGNIFICATO HA PER TE QUESTA TEMATICA?

Sono attratta da elementi di narrazione sovrannaturali/horror per ragioni sconosciute. E’ proprio quello che mi ispira. Un sacco di miei libri si basano sui sogni. Mio nonno era anche molto, molto appassionato di storie dell’orrore e film. Ho vissuto lontano da lui e non sono riuscita a vederlo più di tanto durante la sua vita, ma penso che ho ereditato l’amore del macabro da lui. Lo vedo anche nella mia nipotina, Gabriella. Ama i mostri e ha solo sei anni. I suoi genitori cercano di proteggerla dalle cose spaventose, ma lei le ama.

ORA UNA DOMANDA GENERALE. DOVE TROVI L’ISPIRAZIONE PER TUTTE LE TUE STORIE?

Assolutamente i miei incubi. Direi che la stragrande maggioranza di tutti i miei romanzi e racconti sono ispirati dai miei sogni. Raramente mi viene l’ispirazione durante i momenti in cui sono sveglia. Solo “As the world dies” (“Le cronache del mondo morto”) è venuta fuori dei miei sogni.

QUALI SONO I TUOI SCRITTORI PREFERITI?

Beh, ne ho così tanti ora che è dura solo nominarne qualcuno. Mi piace una grande varietà di generi, così mi piacciono molti scrittori diversi: David Dunwoody (EMPIRE), Ann Aguirre (THE SIRANTHA JAX SERIES), Susan Kaye Quinn (OPEN MINDS), Scot Westerfeld (UGLIES series), Suzanne Collins (THE HUNGER GAMES), il primo Stephen King e J.L. Bryan (JENNY POX).

E I TUOI FILM PREFERITI?

Di nuovo, è dappertutto quello che mi piace. Mi piace tutto, dai film di supereroi ben fatti al thriller alla fantascienza fatta bene. Non vedo l’ora di vedere “The Avengers”, “Prometheus”, “Biancaneve e il cacciatore” e “World War Z”. Il mio film preferito l’anno scorso è stato probabilmente “La ragazza con il tatuaggio del drago”.

PARLANDO DI CINEMA, DOBBIAMO ASPETTARCI QUALCHE LAVORO (FILM O SERIE TV) TRATTO DAI TUOI LIBRI?

Tutto ciò che ho pubblicato finora è stato opzionato per la TV o per un film. Sto lavorando al soggetto pilota di “As the world dies” (“Le cronache del mondo morto”) con il produttore che ha opzionato il lavoro. “The living dead boy and the zombie hunters” (“Il giovane morto vivente e i cacciatori di zombi”) sta mettendo insieme il finanziamento finale. Anche “Pretty when she dies” (“Graziosa quando muore”) e “The tale of the vampire bride” (“Il racconto della moglie del vampiro”) sono stati opzionati.

ULTIMA DOMANDA. QUALI SONO I TUOI PROGETTI PER IL FUTURO E QUALI I TUOI SOGNI?

Il mio progetto per il futuro è quello di continuare a scrivere. Spero di rimanere una scrittrice full-time. Lo sono stata per più di un anno e mi piace. Mi piacerebbe un giorno fare la NYC Bestseller List, ma staremo a vedere. E, naturalmente, mi piacerebbe visitare l’Italia di nuovo nel prossimo futuro.

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S RHIANNON FRATER?

I’m a woman from Texas who loves to write very scary stories with awesome characters.

HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?

Ever since I learned to talk, I have been telling stories. Ever since I learned to write, I’ve been writing stories. I think it’s just a part of me.

YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE THE “AS THE WORLD DIES” TRILOGY. DO YOU WANT TO SPEAK ABOUT IT?

Sure! I originally wrote an online zombie serial that became very popular. I self-published it in three books that were later picked up by Tor (and in Italy, the first book was acquired by Delos Books). The three books are THE FIRST DAYS, FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, and SIEGE.  The name of the trilogy is AS THE WORLD DIES. 

DO YOU WANT TO SPEAK US ABOUT YOUR OTHER WORKS?

I have written other novels as well: a modern day vampire/zombie/necromancer novel called PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES, a gothic horror vampires series set in Buda, Hungary in the 1820’s called THE TALE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE and its sequel THE VENGEANCE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE, a book for younger zombie fans called THE LIVING DEAD BOY AND THE ZOMBIE HUNTERS, as well as two volumes of short stories in the AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOLUME 1 and 2.  On June 12th, my futuristic zombie novel THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING will be released.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE A SERIES ABOUT ZOMBIE?

I didn’t. The story chose me. The inspiration hit and I decided to just go for it.  I never planned to write a zombie novel, let alone a trilogy.

HOW DID YOU INVENTED THE STORY?

I didn’t. I was at work when this stark image of a woman in a pink bathrobe standing outside her front door on her porch popped into my mind. She was staring at the bottom of the front door and then I saw the tiny fingers reaching out to her from inside.  I knew then I had to write it.

WHICH WERE THE DIFFICULTIES YOU MET WITH THE CREATION OF THE PLAYERS AND OF THE SET?

The inception of characters is easy. They just show up, announce their names, and fit into the story.  It’s accurately portraying them that can sometimes prove difficult.  Katie’s bisexuality and Jenni’s mental disorders due to her being an abused housewife were a challenge at times. Since the setting is in Texas and I am a Texan, it was easy to understand the world they live in. Well, other than the zombie part.

WITH THIS TRILOGY YOU WON TWO “DEAD LETTER AWARD”. DO YOU WANT TO TELL US HOW IS GONE?

It was wonderful to win the Dead Letter award in 2008 and 2009 for THE FIRST DAYS and FIGHTING TO SURVIVE. It was such a great honor. THE FIRST DAYS has also landed on a lot of lists naming off the top ten zombie novels or post apocalyptic novels.  I think one of my favorite honors was getting a starred review from Publishers Weekly for THE FIRST DAYS. That was like winning an Oscar.

RECENTLY YOUR BOOKS ARE TRANSLATED IN ITALY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY?

One branch of my family tree came from Italy a very long time ago, so I have a soft spot for Italy. I have visited the country and I loved it! Apparently I look a lot like my Italian ancestors because I was spoken to in Italian the whole time. I almost got kicked off a city tour in Rome because the tour guide thought I was a Roman trying to sneak in.  That was funny.  My mom had taught me a little bit of Italian before we visited, so I did an okay job at times communicating. Sadly, I forgot all of it when I got back to Texas. I do have to say that when I got off the plane in Rome I had this really odd feeling of coming home.  I felt that way the entire time I was there. It was so odd. I kept feeling like I had been there before and that I would turn a corner and find my house. Since then, I dream of living in Italy for a part of my life. I hope it happens.

IN THESE YEARS YOU ALWAYS HAD A PREDILECTION FOR THE AMAZING. WHAT’S THE MEANING FOR YOU OF THIS TOPIC?

I’m drawn to the supernatural/horror elements of storytelling for unknown reasons. It’s just what inspires me. A lot of my books are based on dreams.  My grandfather was also very, very fond of horror stories and movies.  I lived far away from him and didn’t get to see him much during his life, but I think I inherited the love of the macabre from him. I see it in my little niece, Gabriella, as well.  She loves monsters and she’s only six. Her parents try to shield her from scary stuff, but she loves it.

NOW, A GENERAL QUESTION. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE ISPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR STORIES?

Absolutely my nightmares. I would say a vast majority of all my novels and short stories are inspired by my dreams. I rarely have inspiration during my waking moments. Only AS THE WORLD DIES came to me outside my dreams.

WHICH ARE YOUR FAVORITE WRITERS?

Well, I have so many right now it’s rough to just name a few.  I really enjoy a wide variety of genres, so I like a lot of different writers. David Dunwoody (EMPIRE), Ann Aguirre (THE SIRANTHA JAX SERIES), Susan Kaye Quinn (OPEN MINDS), Scot Westerfeld (UGLIES series), Suzanne Collins (THE HUNGER GAMES), early Stephen King, and J.L. Bryan (JENNY POX).

AND YOUR FAVORITE FILMS?

Again, I’m all over the place in what I like.  I like everything from well-done superhero movies to thrillers to well-done science fiction. I’m looking forward to The Avengers, Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman, and World War Z.  My favorite movie last year was probably The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

SPEAKING ABOUT CINEMA, DO WE HAVE TO EXPECT ANY WORKS (FILM OR TV SERIES) FROM YOUR BOOKS?

Everything I have published so far has been optioned for TV or film.  I’m working on the pilot script for AS THE WORLD DIES with the producer who optioned the work.  THE LIVING DEAD BOY AND THE ZOMBIE HUNTERS is putting together the final financing.  PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES and THE TALE OF THE VAMPIRE BRIDE are also optioned.

THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?

My plan for the future is just to keep writing.  I hope to remain a full-time writer. I’ve been one for over a year now and I love it.  I would love to make the NYC Bestseller list one day, but we’ll see.  And, of course, I’d love to visit Italy again in the near future.
