Lynsay Sands è una scrittrice canadese che ha pubblicato più di trenta libri e vinto moltissimi premi. Le sue storie sono un sapiente mix di horror, urban fantasy e commedia romantica con una spruzzata di humour ed erotismo, caratteristiche queste che l’hanno fatta diventare una delle più acclamate scrittrici di vampiri oltreoceano. Da poco i suoi romanzi sono arrivati anche in Italia, grazie a Delos Books, e noi abbiamo avuto il piacere di incontrarla per voi. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato.
PENSO CHE SI POSSA COMINCIARE DALL’INIZIO: CHI E’ LYNSAY SANDS E COME HAI INIZIATO A SCRIVERE?
Non so come rispondere alla domanda su chi è Lynsay Sands. Sono solo io. :) Sono cresciuta in una piccola città, trascorrendo le mie estati in un cottage su un’isola dove c’erano un sacco di sole, sabbia e acqua, ma niente televisione, sale cinematografiche, o cose di questo genere. La sola cosa da fare era nuotare e leggere, e poi scrivere, ed è quello che ho fatto. Ho letto molto, e poi una volta che ho saputo come infilare insieme le parole in frasi, ho cominciato a scrivere. Mi sedevo sulla scogliera, con vista sul lago, e scribacchiavo storie per divertirmi. All’età di dieci o undici anni scrivevo romanzi d’avventura di 70, 80 pagine. Sulla terraferma che di solito era il mio armadio. :) I miei genitori volevano che io uscissi e giocassi come i bambini normali, ma io volevo scrivere, così ho avuto un posto segreto per scrivere con la scrivania e tutto nel mio armadio dove mi nascondevo a scrivere. Loro pensavano che io fossi fuori e io scrivevo in pace. Tutti erano contenti.
I TUOI LIBRI PIU’ FAMOSI SONO INCLUSI NEL “CICLO ARGENEAU”. COSA PUOI DIRCI DELLA STORIA E DELLA SUA ORIGINE?
La linea generale della storia… ci sono persone immortali che vivono tra la popolazione mortale di oggi. Essi sono discendenti di una civiltà antica e isolata che era avanzata tecnologicamente al punto che ha cominciato a lavorare con nano tecnologie di bio-ingegneria come aiuto medico per combattere le malattie e per la riparazione di lesioni all’interno del corpo, senza la necessità di un intervento chirurgico invasivo. Questi nano-chip utilizzavano il sangue per effettuare le riparazioni e alimentare se stessi il che significava che l’ospite aveva bisogno di più sangue di quanto un corpo potrebbe fornire per sostenere le nano. In quella civiltà questo era stato risolto con le trasfusioni. Tuttavia, quando una serie di disastri naturali (terremoti e vulcani) pose fine a quella civiltà, solo coloro su cui i nano-chip erano state testate sopravvissero, e improvvisamente si trovarono in una società primitiva. Senza le loro trasfusioni di sangue tanto necessarie, molti morirono, ma in altri i nano-chip avevano vissuto fino alla loro programmazione per mantenere l’ospite alle loro condizioni ottiali e avevano forzato una sorta di evoluzione su di loro, dotandoli di zanne, forza extra, visione notturna e altre abilità in modo che i loro ospiti potessero ottenere il sangue di cui avevano bisogno e rimanessero al loro apice. Sono diventati immortali, o vampiri. Ogni libro segue una coppia diversa nel modo in cui il mortale trova e vince il suo compagno di vita, spesso superando situazioni di pericolo per farlo. Personaggi di storie precedenti si trovano di solito in ogni libro, ma ogni storia è di solito a sé stante anche se ci sono una o due eccezioni in cui si intrecciano due storie o sono strettamente connesse.
QUALI SONO STATE LE DIFFICOLTA’ CHE HAI INCONTRATO NELLA CREAZIONE DEI PERSONAGGI E DELL’AMBIENTAZIONE?
Hmm… Penso che la parte più difficile nello scrivere la serie degli Argeneau sia stato mantenere la traccia di tutti i miei personaggi. Diventa un problema a volte soprattutto ora che ci sono tanti personaggi di questa serie, ma in genere ce la faccio abbastanza bene a tenere le fila. L’errore occasionale può essere fatto nei libri, ma nessuno è perfetto e ciò include anche me e i miei editor. Inoltre, i lettori tendono a godere nel farlo notare! :) Per quanto riguarda l’ambientazione, non mi causa problemi. L’ambientazione è il tempo presente. Finora hanno avuto luogo in Canada, Stati Uniti e in Europa.
RECENTEMENTE I TUOI LIBRI SONO STATI TRADOTTI IN ITALIA. COSA NE PENSI DEL NOSTRO PAESE?
Lo amo! Sono stata estremamente felice di sentire che i miei libri sarebbero stati tradotti e venduti in Italia, specialmente da quando una buona parte dei miei personaggi (i Nottes) sono italiani. Ho già deciso che per la mia prossima vacanza, che sarà in un futuro molto prossimo, visiterò il vostro bellissimo paese per ambientare storie future, e non posso aspettare!
IN QUESTI ANNI HAI SEMPRE AVUTO UNA PREDILEZIONE PER IL SOPRANNATURALE/PARANORMALE. CHE SIGNIFICATO HA PER TE QUESTA TEMATICA?
Hmm… Mi piace leggere/guardare un buon horror o thriller, ma non deve essere di natura soprannaturale. Non ho mai realmente deciso di scrivere una serie basata sui vampiri. E’ stato solo un colpo di fortuna. Amici mi hanno suggerito di fare insieme una antologia sui vampiri per Halloween, ho buttato giù un paio di idee che in realtà hanno destato il mio interesse e che volevo scrivere. Anche se l’antologia non è mai stata realizzata, le idee per la storia sono state bloccate e gli Argeneau sono nati.
ORA UNA DOMANDA GENERALE. DOVE TROVI L’ISPIRAZIONE PER TUTTE LE TUE STORIE?
Traggo la mia ispirazione dalla vita. La gente è divertente, e spesso si imbatte in situazioni molto ridicole. Possiamo anche essere molto contradditori, volendo qualcosa finché non lo otteniamo per poi volere invece qualcos’altro. Nel complesso, siamo proprio divertenti, e mi piace scriverne al riguardo.
PRESTO O TARDI, DOBBIAMO ASPETTARCI QUALCHE LAVORO (FILM O SERIE TELEVISIVA) TRATTO DAI TUOI LIBRI?
Mi piacerebbe vedere gli Argeneau sul grande schermo, ma per ora nessun produttore mi ha contattato. Forse un giorno.
ULTIMA DOMANDA. QUALI PROGETTI HAI PER IL FUTURO E QUALI SONO I TUOI SOGNI?
Non ho in progetto di terminare la serie degli Argeneau molto presto finché i miei lettori continueranno ad apprezzarli. Per quanto riguarda il futuro degli Argeneau, la storia di Jeanne Louise, “Lady Is A Vamp”, sta per uscire alla fine di luglio e poi la storia di Anders, “Immortal Ever After”, uscirà tra qualche tempo il prossimo anno. Oltre a questo ci sono non pochi personaggi che sono stati introdotti di recente che hanno bisogno di storie, in particolare i Nottes. Di qui il viaggio in Italia al più presto. Per quanto riguarda i miei sogni… la scrittura è sempre stato il mio sogno e ho avuto la fortuna di ottenerlo. Indovina un po’, ho bisogno di elaborare nuovi sogni. Nel frattempo, mi sto godendo questo.

I THINK WE CAN START FROM THE BEGINNING: WHO’S LYNSAY SANDS AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN TO WRITE?
I don’t know how to answer the question of who Lynsay Sands is. It’s just me. :) I grew up in a small town, spending my summers at a cottage on an island where there was lots of sun, sand and water, but no television, movie theater, or things of that nature. The only thing to do there was swim and read, and then to write, and that’s what I did. I read a lot, and then once I knew how to string words together into sentences, I started writing. I’d sit on the cliff, overlooking the lake, and scribble stories to amuse myself. By the age of ten or eleven I was writing 70 and 80 page adventure stories. On the mainland that was usually in my closet. :) My parents wanted me to go outside and play like normal kids, but I wanted to write, so I had a secret writing spot with desk and all in my closet where I’d hide and write. They’d think I was outside and I got to write unbothered. Everyone was happy.
YOUR MOST FAMOUS BOOKS ARE INCLUDED IN THE “ARGENEAU SAGA”. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE STORY AND ITS ORIGIN?
The general story line… there are immortal people living among the mortal population today. They are descendents of an ancient and isolated civilization that was advanced technologically to the point that they began to work with bio-engineered nanos as a medical aid to fight disease and repair injuries from inside the body without the need for invasive surgery. These nanos used blood to make repairs and fuel themselves which meant the host needed more blood than a body could supply to support the nanos. In that civilization this was dealt with through transfusions. However, when a series of natural disasters (earthquakes and volcanoes) brought an end to that civilization, only those people the nanos had been tested on survived, and they suddenly found themselves in a primitive society. Without their much needed blood transfusions, many died, but in others the nanos lived up to their programming to keep the host at their peak condition and forced a sort of evolution on them, bringing on fangs, extra strength, night vision and other skills so that their hosts could get the blood they needed and remain at their peak. They became immortals, or vampires. Each book follows a different couple as the mortal finds and wins his life mate, often overcoming dangerous situations to do it. Characters from previous stories are usually in each book, but each story usually stands alone although there are one or two exceptions where two stories are intertwined or closely connected.
WHICH WERE THE DIFFICULTIES YOU MET WITH THE CREATION OF THE PLAYERS AND OF THE SET?
Hmm… I think the hardest part about writing the Argeneau series is keeping track of all my characters. It does get to be a problem at times especially now that there are so many characters in this series but generally I do pretty well at keeping it straight. The occasional mistake has made it into the books, but no one’s perfect and that includes myself and my editors. Besides, readers tend to enjoy pointing it out! :) As for the setting, it doesn’t cause me problems. The setting is the present time. They have taken place in Canada, the US and Europe so far.
RECENTLY YOUR BOOKS ARE TRANSLATED IN ITALY. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT OUR COUNTRY?
Love it! I was extremely happy to hear my books were being translated and sold in Italy, especially since a good chunk of my characters (Nottes) are Italian. I have already decided that for my next vacation, which will be in the very near future, I will be visiting your lovely country for background for future stories, and I can’t wait!
IN THESE YEARS YOU ALWAYS HAD A PREDILECTION FOR THE SUPERNATURAL/PARANORMAL. WHAT’S THE MEANING FOR YOU OF THIS TOPIC?
Hmm… I do enjoy reading/watching a good horror or thriller but they don’t have to be supernatural in nature. I actually never set out to write a series based on vampires. It was just a fluke. Friends suggested doing a vampire anthology together for Halloween, I threw out a couple of ideas that actually peaked my interest and that I wanted to write. Although the anthology never materialized, the story ideas stuck and the Argeneaus were born.
NOW, A GENERAL QUESTION. WHERE DO YOU FIND THE ISPIRATION FOR ALL YOUR STORIES?
I get my inspiration from life. People are funny, and often land themselves in the most ridiculous situations. We can also be incredibly contradictory, wanting something right up until we get it and then wanting something else instead. All in all, we’re just funny, and I enjoy writing about it.
SOONER OR LATER, DO WE HAVE TO EXPECT ANY WORKS (FILM OR TV SERIES) FROM YOUR BOOKS?
I would love to see the Argeneaus on the big screen, but so far no producers have approached me. Perhaps one day.
THE LAST REQUEST. WHICH PLANS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE AND WHICH ARE YOUR DREAMS?
I have no plans to end the Argeneau series anytime soon as my readers are still enjoying them. As for the future of the Argeneaus, Jeanne Louise’s story, Lady Is A Vamp, is coming out at the end of July and then Anders story, Immortal Ever After, is coming out some time next year. Other than that there are quite a few characters that have been introduced recently that need stories, specifically the Nottes. Hence the trip to Italy soon. As for my dreams…writing had always been my dream and I’m fortunate enough to have that. Guess I need to come up with new dreams. In the meantime, I’m enjoying this one.
